Lee Summit to cover remaining 74 days at NOVA Center for student in foster care, district says

School officials told the finance committee they will pick up a NOVA Center contract for a transferred student in foster care to maintain continuity of services for the remaining 74 days of the school year, and the district will participate in IEP meetings and reassess placement at year end.
At the March 9 meeting the committee reviewed a NOVA Center contract to continue placement for a student who transferred into Lee's Summit R‑VII and is in foster care.
Dr. Matthysse explained staff determined it was in the student’s best interest to maintain the student’s placement at the Nova Center — originally arranged by Grand View School District — to preserve continuity during a period of disruption in the student’s home life. "This contract is for a student who has transferred to the Lee Summit R7 School District ... it was determined in a best interest determination to maintain that student's placement at Nova Center," Dr. Matthysse said.
Staff said the district will join the student’s IEP team, monitor progress and, before the school year ends, determine whether to continue the contractual placement or consider a public separate day program. The contract will cover the remaining 74 days of the school year; staff said IEP meetings can be convened at any time during the year if progress warrants a change.
Committee members asked whether reviews would be annual or more frequent; staff said IEPs can meet as needed and staff routinely communicates with outside agencies for students placed outside the district.
