Rachel Shepard, the commissions director, told commissioners on May 4 that the office recently received a full contract from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission that increases the commissions case-processing capacity for the year.
"We did just receive the full contract that would allow us the entire amount of what we are supposed to complete for case processing," Shepard said. She said the commission expects a target of about 65 cases this year, up from a normal 50.
Shepard also reported staffing and operations updates: Chief Gilman approved posting a paid college intern position for the summer and possibly into the fall, and staff will look to recruit a student to help with limited funding. "It should probably go live here in the next week or so," Shepard said.
On caseloads, Shepard listed current program figures: 87 open investigations, about 26 pending intakes, 13 cases waiting for responses, four cases in court and three on the public-hearing track. Because the group did not reach quorum at the April meeting, Shepard said the compliance review will bring 17 determinations to be considered after the commission meeting.
Staff said they have begun preparing a modification request to the EEOC because intake numbers are already exceeding planning estimates. Shepard said the EEOC contract paperwork needs signatures before it is returned to the agency.
The directors report closed with an appeal to commissioners to help with outreach and with administrative reminders tied to the upcoming compliance review session.
