The finance committee on May 4 postponed consideration of a home‑rule petition that would allow the Boys & Girls Club to obtain an easement for new facilities on land at Elden B. Keith Field.
Vice Chair of the Brockton School Committee told the council the school committee had scheduled the Boys & Girls Club to appear the following evening for a discussion and that legal counsel would also participate. Derek Heim, president and CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Metro South, said the club had raised millions to build new facilities and urged the council the matter move forward after the school committee’s review.
Because the school committee planned to act, the finance committee voted to postpone the petition to its next meeting so the school committee could provide an update. Heim said the club will return to the city council with a special act for the legislature if needed.
What’s next: The finance committee will consider the item after the school committee’s discussion; the Boys & Girls Club urged a favorable vote at the school committee meeting to allow planning and design to proceed.
Provenance: Discussion and postponement occurred during Item 16 (SEG 1381–1462).
