Wayne Board reviews semiannual student-safety report: 12 incidents of violence, 19 confirmed HIB cases

The Wayne Board of Education received its semiannual Student Safety Data System report covering Sept. 1–Dec. 31, 2024, that district officials read at the Feb. 20 meeting.
According to the report read to the board, there were 12 incidents described as violence (assaults, fights and threats), one incident of vandalism, zero weapons offenses and zero substance-abuse incidents during the reporting period. The district also reported 87 code-of-conduct incidents that led to educational removal. Separately, staff investigated 69 suspected HIB (harassment, intimidation and bullying) complaints and confirmed 19 as meeting HIB criteria.
The presenter said consequences and remediation included counseling, parent conferences, discipline in accordance with the district code of conduct, stay-away agreements and increased adult supervision and monitoring. Two cases were investigated by school-level anti-bullying specialists with district coordinator support.
Why it matters: New Jersey statute requires this semiannual disclosure so boards and the public can track school safety and HIB trends. The numbers show the district saw a modest number of violent incidents and a larger number of disciplinary removals for the period cited.
District follow-up: The report listed remedial measures already taken at the school level (counseling, monitoring, schedule changes and other supports) and stated each school has instituted programming intended to reduce bullying and improve school climate.

What’s next: The board will continue semiannual reporting and monitor whether confirmed HIB incidents and removals rise or fall in subsequent reporting periods.
