Council creates housing crisis task force to coordinate local planning and state engagement

The East Hampton City Council on March 18 adopted a resolution asking the mayor to form a Housing Crisis Task Force to coordinate local and state housing policy efforts.
The task force, as requested in the resolution, will include the city council president (or designee), state legislative representatives or designees, chairs of the Housing Partnership, Rent Study Committee, Planning Board, the Housing Authority chair, the planning and public health directors and a representative of the East Hampton Tenants Union. The council asked the mayor to convene the group at least once a year in a public meeting and to establish a dedicated public‑facing redirect email (suggested: housingcrisis@easthamptonma.gov) that forwards notices to task force members without permitting direct replies, to preserve open‑meeting compliance while improving communication.
Sponsors said the resolution is intended to support a “whole of government” approach that brings elected officials, boards, staff and tenant advocates into a shared channel for updates on ordinances, grant applications, legislative changes and housing developments. The resolution notes state reports that call for increased housing production and ties local zoning reform and ongoing housing projects to the statewide agenda.
The council approved the measure by roll call and instructed the clerk to send copies to the legislative delegation and relevant state offices.
