Parks Commission approves new zipline to replace aging jumper at theater park

The Parks Commission on March 3 voted to approve replacing an aging playground jumper at the theater park with a manufactured zipline.

Parks staff member Cody presented the proposal, saying the recommended model “fits within our budget” and noting similar, heavily used ziplines at other local parks. He described the unit as roughly 75 feet long by 25 feet wide, requiring a larger base and an embedded ramp for access, and said its ride uses a disc seat rated for roughly ages 5–12.

The commission discussed footprint and visibility from the road, installation details and safety considerations. Staff noted the proposed unit would occupy more ground than the current jumper but that extra space at the site would allow expansion. Commissioners asked about harnesses and height; Cody said the design uses a seated disc on the cable rather than a harness and that the ramp and platform would be embedded in the ground.

A committee member moved to approve the zipline “as presented” and another member seconded; the chair called for a voice vote and the transcript records an affirmative response indicating approval. The transcript does not record a roll-call tally or breakdown by name.

Staff said they will coordinate specifications with the manufacturer and follow up by email with details requested by commissioners about installation timing and footprint. The commission did not set a final installation date at the meeting.

Next steps: staff will circulate the manufacturer specifications and a site plan and begin procurement steps as allowed by available budget and procurement rules.
