The East Hampton Senior Center building committee reported progress and recommended commissioning an architect to conduct a feasibility study for a possible new senior center on a city‑owned Park Street site.
Dan Rrist, the committee chair and former councilor, summarized a multi‑year site search and program review. The committee ruled out privately owned sites with unwilling sellers, parcels encumbered as recreational parkland (which would require a two‑thirds legislative action to repurpose), and locations with unsafe access. The Park Street parcel was chosen as the preferred site for a feasibility review because it contains ample acreage (54 acres total with five acres sufficient for the center footprint) and potential access options; nearby transit and shuttle service already serve the area.
The feasibility work will examine engineering, wetlands, topography, parking needs, access, and cost estimates and will inform future design and funding discussions. The committee emphasized that no final design or funding request is yet recommended and that public engagement will follow the feasibility study. Committee leadership underscored the public‑health and community‑programs need for additional space to host services that currently operate on waiting lists in East Hampton.
