Council debated a resolution to create a Clarksburg Business Advisory Committee intended to bring business owners and staff together to develop recommendations for the city.
The resolution as presented called for up to 12 members: six–eight business owners plus three city staff and one nonvoting representative from the Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB). Council members questioned whether the committee would have fiduciary authority, how many voting members there should be, the length of terms, and whether the CVB or the Chamber of Commerce should occupy the designated seat. Several council members said they wanted an active committee with clear objectives, such as hosting an annual business summit; others cautioned about requiring activities that would obligate city funds.
Councilman Worth and others proposed making the Chamber of Commerce a voting representative. A motion to amend the resolution to add a Chamber representative as a voting member was seconded and carried, and the amended resolution was approved by the council.
Council clarified that recommendations from the committee would come to the full council for action and that the committee would not have autonomous fiduciary authority to spend city funds. Staff said appointments would be made following standard posting procedures and that terms would be staggered as described in the resolution.
