Mr. Miller reported that the city has issued a request for qualifications to solicit redevelopment proposals for the Beckling Building and its pier and has received four letters of interest. "We got four," he said, adding each development team toured the building and was given historical records to inform proposals. Full qualifications or proposals are due March 27, after which the city will conduct a selection process.
Members asked about the building's age and historic value during the update. Speakers noted the structure dates to the late 19th/early 20th century (one participant referenced 1923) and that the building represents a form of "amusement architecture" of local and state significance. On whether the city is required to accept any respondent, Mr. Miller said it is not: "No. It's at the pleasure of the city to interview all of them or none of them to move forward or not."
The committee did not take a formal vote on the RFQ itself. Next steps identified in the discussion are: staff will collect and present proposals after the March 27 deadline and a selection process will follow; no additional commitments or contracts were approved at this meeting.
The Beckling Building item remains active on the commission's project list; staff noted they will circulate follow-up information and selection timelines after the submission deadline.
