The Long Beach Town Council on March 9 approved signing a letter of support to seek federal community project funds through Congressman Frank Murvan's program to replace portable radios for reserve and part-time police deputies. The town requested $65,000 to update remaining portable radios so they match recently purchased units for full-time staff; if awarded, the funding would require no local match and any award decision would occur in 2027.
Chief Swiss explained the request and said the council's signatures would forward the letter to the congressman's office. "We are applying for an opportunity in 2027 with no matching funds from the town," he said, asking council members to sign the letter of support; the council moved and approved the request.
Separately, Leaport County Prosecutor Sean Fagan offered to fund two in-car dual-antenna moving-radar patrol units (total cost $5,582.50) through his traffic infraction deferral program; the prosecutor's office will cover 100% of that replacement equipment cost, and the council acknowledged the planned donation.
Next steps: Council signatories will submit the letter of support to Congressman Murvan's office; the radar units will be procured with prosecutor-provided funds and integrated into patrol vehicles.
