President Joyce Schmidt opened the public hearing and noted the budget and finance committee recommended the higher rate to support capital equipment needs, including leaf-back trucks, a new F-550 and a street sweeper. No members of the public spoke in opposition during the hearing.
One resident at the meeting described the increase as reasonable, saying, "It's $10 currently and it's going to increase to $15 per month," and indicated the service remains a good value. The council then moved, seconded and approved the ordinance on second reading.
The council discussed that the additional revenue will be applied toward the capital plan and used alongside other funding sources to address equipment shortfalls identified in the five-year capital plan. The ordinance changes the town code language in Title 9, Chapter 96, which covers charges for garbage, refuse removal and leaf pickup.
Next steps: the ordinance was adopted on second reading; implementation details and billing adjustments will be handled by the clerk's office and reflected in forthcoming billing statements.
