On the John Collins signage project, staff said they are finalizing designs with Mary Dersch of the East Grand Rapids Historical Society and will pour a small half‑circle pad to provide a safe viewing area off the sidewalk so visitors can read the signs without impeding pedestrian flow. The Community Foundation approved funding for the project; staff said there is no cost to the city for the signs themselves.
Staff also said the custom binocular system for bird‑watching is on order; the Community Foundation will pass through funds to purchase the unit, and staff obtained a 10% governmental discount on the purchase. The director said the binocular design was chosen to prevent panning toward residences.
Commissioners asked about athletic‑field conditions after recent heavy rains. The director reported that some overflow areas (Bretton Downs) were soggy but that fields such as Remington Park were walkable within days and that drainage work at Manhattan Park helped it fare well. Staff said parking lots at Manhattan Park will be resurfaced this spring as part of follow‑up work.
