La Verne fire officials told the City Council on July 1 that all consumer fireworks are illegal within city limits, urged residents to "leave the show to the pros," and outlined enforcement and public-safety plans for the July 4 holiday.
Community Risk Reduction Specialist Lonnie Shipman and Fire Marshal Fred Stange reviewed recent local and regional vegetation fires, explained health and animal-safety concerns, and emphasized that fireworks present a significant ignition hazard during a dry fire season. Shipman warned that consumer items often marketed as "safer" are nonetheless dangerous; he noted that sparklers can reach temperatures of about 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
Fire staff said the city will patrol in the evenings during the holiday, will enforce the no-fireworks rule and intends to issue fines for violations; Fire Department staff told council that a $1,000 fine is planned this year. Officials also promoted the city fireworks show (tickets available for $20; children under a specified age free) as a safer alternative and encouraged attendance.
Councilors thanked fire staff for outreach and for continuing a public-education campaign, and urged residents to report fireworks activity to the city's non-emergency line rather than calling 911 unless there is an active emergency. The council also highlighted related community events — the parade, pancake breakfast and a raffle supporting the K9 Foundation — and closed the meeting with a reminder to celebrate safely.
