Peter Hogle, vice president of the Mount San Antonio College Board of Trustees, introduced Dr. Martha Garcia to the La Verne City Council on June 3 as the college’s incoming president.
Hogle described Mount SAC as California’s largest single-campus community college and noted student demographics, the upcoming 77th commencement and the retirement last year of the college’s longtime president. "We are thrilled that we have named a new president," Hogle said.
Dr. Martha Garcia spoke directly to council and community members about her background as a first-generation community college student and outlined Mount SAC’s scale and program plans. She said Mount SAC served more than 70,000 students in the most recent academic year and noted the college will begin offering a bachelor’s in technology in spring 2025. "I look forward to engaging with you, collaborating with you and my commitment is to do the best that we can collectively to serve the community as best as possible," Garcia said.
Why it matters: The introduction signals an opportunity for local collaboration between La Verne and Mount SAC on workforce, education pathways and community programs. Council members praised the partnership and noted local students who use Mount SAC programs.
What’s next: Dr. Garcia will assume leadership duties as described by the college; Mount SAC’s commencement and program-launch timelines were reiterated at the meeting.
