Subcommittee flags transportation training and policy gaps; schedules further reviews

The Policy Subcommittee identified gaps in transportation and related policies and asked administration to develop clearer requirements for training, oversight and conduct.
Members proposed adding a requirement that all bus contractors and drivers participate in at least annual training run by the school department and that job descriptions for bus monitors and TAs reflect mandatory training expectations. The group also discussed whether radial-mileage distance rules should be revised next year and whether bus conduct rules should be consolidated or explicitly tied to building administrators because the bus is an extension of the school day.
Michelle, who has been researching comparative policies in Massachusetts, said other districts have clearer policy language and mandatory training standards that North Kingstown could adapt. The committee agreed to hold transportation and the remaining items (attendance boundaries and dress code) for detailed review at a future subcommittee meeting; the next full slate of policy reviews was set for Aug. 26.
Next steps: staff will review bus-contractor contracts for training language, draft mandatory training language for inclusion in policy or job descriptions, and return proposed language to the subcommittee for consideration.
