The La Verne City Council voted on July 1 to remove a marked pedestrian crosswalk at the intersection of Arrow Highway and B Street after a staff report described safety concerns at the uncontrolled, high-speed location.
City Engineer Cody Howling told the council the intersection is an uncontrolled, free-moving traffic flow on Arrow Highway with a posted speed of 45 mph and multiple lanes of pavement to cross. Staff reviewed the crosswalk in light of a new traffic signal installed nearby and recommended removal pursuant to the Vehicle Code's public-notice and removal process.
A short public comment period included concerns that removing the marked crosswalk could reduce pedestrian safety at that location. After discussion, the council adopted a resolution to remove the marked crosswalk under Vehicle Code Division 11, Chapter 5; the motion carried with council approval.
Staff said an alternate marked crossing is within reasonable proximity and explained that notices were posted at the crosswalk ends and on the agenda board as required prior to removal. The council directed staff to proceed with the removal work and related public-notice follow up.
The resolution and staff report cite Vehicle Code procedures for marked-crosswalk removal; the council approved the staff recommendation and moved to implement the change to on‑street markings and signage.
