Council approves consent calendar, waives overnight parking expediting fee; chamber and Rose Donuts recognized

The Temple City Council unanimously approved the consent calendar at its Dec. 17 meeting, including an item waiving the overnight parking permit "expediting fee" and directing staff to process refunds for residents who paid extra fees.
"One of those items that we approved tonight has to do with our annual overnight parking permits ... one of those items that was approved tonight is the waiver of that Expediting fee," the mayor said while noting refunds will be processed for those who paid. Councilmember roll call recorded 'yes' votes from Council Member Chen, Council Member Man, Council Member Sternquist, Mayor Pro Tem U and Mayor Chavez.
The council opened the meeting by honoring Susan and Charlie Yip of Rose Donuts for 39 years of service to the community. Charlie and Susan were recognized with certificates; the council and attendees applauded and the business provided donuts for the meeting. A representative speaking on behalf of Rose Donuts thanked the council and said, "it is a great honor for me and my wife to be here to accept this recognition." The mayor noted a new owner (Amy) will continue the business as part of the community.
City Manager Brian Cook introduced a Temple City Chamber of Commerce update. Ben Long, chamber board president, and other chamber representatives highlighted 2024 activities including community events (Summer Night Bites, Small Business Connects), workforce development efforts and committees focused on real estate and home improvement. Council members praised the chamber's civic engagement and outreach to schools and local businesses.
No formal public hearings or new business items were presented at the meeting; council members said several agenda items (including an RFP for Sereno Drive demolition and park/architectural services) will return to committee with memos in coming weeks.
