Planning Commission appoints two alternates to Architectural Review Panel

The Calabasas Planning Commission appointed two alternate members to the city’s Architectural Review Panel during its May 7 meeting. The commission unanimously approved both applicants after brief presentations and commissioner questions.

The appointees introduced themselves to the commission. Eric Copella described a long career in design and operations, including work on themed environments and commercial projects; he said he values preserving Calabasas’s architectural character. Copella told the commission he does not generally favor visible metal roofs in much of Calabasas “unless you make it look like it’s not metal,” and said he would participate in panel reviews and site-specific design discussions. Mory Mortavi said he is an active residential designer‑builder with experience in Canada and the United States; he emphasized hands‑on construction experience and argued metal roofing can reduce fire risk if detailed and colored to fit neighborhood character.

Staff described the ARP alternates’ role as providing design review, answering applicant questions, and offering practical views on materials and site planning. A commissioner noted the panel is intended to offer candid design feedback rather than pre‑judge projects; commissioners asked both applicants whether they could attend meetings and provide timely comments — both said they could.

A motion to approve both applicants was made, seconded, and carried without opposition. The commission welcomed the new alternates and asked staff to complete administrative onboarding.

The commission’s decision was procedural and limited to appointment; the Architectural Review Panel will continue to advise on design matters for projects as they are routed to that body.
