Boston tests sensors, new bins and sewer traps as part of citywide rodent‑control pilots

Commissioner Tanya Del Rio told the Ways and Means Committee on May 4 that Inspectional Services is testing six types of rodent‑control interventions as part of a citywide pilot to identify the most effective approaches to reduce rodent activity.
Del Rio listed the interventions under test as sewer traps, burrow/treatment trapping, trash compactors, trash‑barrel toppers, ground sensors and camera/motion sensors. She said the sensors are infrared/motion devices placed only on public property and programmed to filter out human sightings; sensors record rodent activity and allow the analytics team to compare the impact of different interventions at matched sites.
Del Rio also described containerization pilots (working with the Veterans’ Housing Authority), a citywide rollout of rat‑resistant barrels in selected public spaces (Chinatown, the North End and the Boston Common were cited), and a schedule for installing additional barrels in Mattapan Square. She said the city is running paired tests across comparable sites to measure which interventions yield the greatest reduction in activity before investing citywide.
On response performance, Del Rio reported that "our response time to rodent complaints is currently meeting service level in 99% of the cases," noting the work is coordinated with Public Works, Parks and other departments and that private property owners remain responsible for treatment on their parcels though ISD staff will advise and may issue violations when appropriate.
During Q&A councilors pressed for rollout details in neighborhood hotspots (North End, Nubian Square), the department said it has installed sensor and sewer traps in the North End, is installing additional sewer sensors, and will expand containerization pilots where early data show promise. Staff emphasized that many sensors and traps are experimental: the city will expand based on measured success and cost‑effectiveness.
Departments asked council members to continue reporting private‑property problems through 311 so inspectors can prioritize follow‑ups and neighborhood walkthroughs. The committee requested follow‑up on pilot evaluation timelines and evidence of neighborhood impact.
