Del City councilors elected Greg Childers mayor during their April 20 meeting and administered his oath of office the same evening.
The council established a nomination-and-vote procedure and heard nominations including Greg Childers, Councilwoman Pam Finch (self-nominated) and Francisco Erodondo. After members cast their votes, the council announced Childers as the new mayor and quickly moved to swear him in. Childers told the meeting he would focus on collaboration: "One of the things I promise to do is come in here and work hard ... and bring some trust into this city, get our council working together and our city staff as well," he said.
The council discussed the procedure in public before voting, agreeing to an ordered nomination process and verifying nominee qualifications under the city charter. The city attorney advised the body that it may set its own internal procedures for electing a mayor and that, if a replacement were not chosen within 60 days, the charter provides for a citizen vote. Council members confirmed they were prepared to complete the selection process at the meeting.
Childers was immediately sworn in under the oath required by city ordinance and state law. After the ceremony, he offered a brief outline of priorities including repairing relationships between council and staff and addressing resident complaints.
The selection followed a broader agenda that included public comments, staff reports and votes on municipal business. The council moved on to other agenda items after completing the mayoral selection and oath.
