San Luis Obispo County proclaims May 2026 CalFresh Awareness Month

The San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors proclaimed May 2026 CalFresh Awareness Month, urging residents, businesses and organizations to support CalFresh and its role in improving community health and ending hunger.

Reading the proclamation, the Chair said the board “does hereby proclaim May 2026 as CalFresh Awareness Month and encourages all residents, businesses, and organizations to support efforts to raise awareness about CalFresh and its essential role in improving community health and ending hunger.” The Chair also thanked Molly, the food bank staff, volunteers and the Department of Social Services for their outreach efforts.

A committee member thanked colleagues and the community for backing the program. “I would also like to thank each of you for your support for the CalFresh program,” the committee member said. “Through your support, you are helping to improve the lives of many individuals and families in our community.”

Another committee member highlighted the program’s work with older residents, saying the community should ensure seniors know about available tools to help them remain in place. “We’re really grateful for sharing in the proclamation today and working all months to make sure that local seniors know that we’ve got their back, and that there are tools out there to help them be able to afford to stay in this community that they love,” the committee member said.

Officials noted that more than a decade of outreach to raise CalFresh participation has yielded gains. One committee member said, “I’m really pleased to see that the hard work of over a decade in trying to increase participation has paid off.”
