Meridian council adopts agenda, issues proclamations for ALS Awareness, Idaho Gives and Building Safety Month

The Meridian City Council met on May 5, 2026, adopted its published agenda and consent agenda by voice votes and issued three proclamations recognizing ALS Awareness Month, Idaho Gives Week and Building Safety Month.

Mayor Robert Simison read each proclamation and invited guests to the podium. At the first proclamation recognizing ALS Awareness Month, the mayor recited the text noting the disease’s progressive effects and called on residents to support research and clinical trials.

Evan Bascom of the Idaho Community Foundation spoke after the Idaho Gives Week proclamation, describing the statewide giving campaign and the foundation’s targets. “Our goal this year is $6 million collectively raised from 20,000 individuals,” Bascom said, and added the campaign’s current progress as “about 2.5” (the transcript did not specify the unit for that figure). He encouraged residents to visit idahogives.org to donate.

At the Building Safety Month proclamation, a city building department official thanked the mayor and council and praised department staff, noting that customer surveys show broadly positive feedback and highlighting Building Safety Month themes and resources on the International Code Council website.

No members of the public had signed up to speak at the public forum. Councilman Overton moved to adopt the agenda and later moved approval of the consent agenda; both motions were approved by voice vote. Overton also moved to adjourn the meeting, and the council approved adjournment.

The meeting opened at 6:00 p.m. and concluded shortly after the proclamations and recognition items.
