At the May 5 Covington City Council meeting, Patrick Brooks of 416 East Gibson Street urged officials to improve the Gibson Street segment of the St. Tam Trace, saying the corridor is confusing for visitors and would benefit from clearer wayfinding and safety upgrades.
"I totally believe we can put a bike lane right down Gibson Street," Brooks said, adding that the change would be "not something I think we need to spend millions of dollars on" and that the community should discuss whether to pursue it.
Orion Vans, president of the Covington Business Association, told the council the current route along Gibson Street is little more than painted symbols and leaves many visitors confused. "We're asking the council to consider developing a dedicated, safe, clearly marked bike lane along those brief blocks of Gibson Street," Vans said, arguing the improvement would protect the downtown event district and help rather than compete with local businesses.
Council members commended the speakers and suggested next steps. One council member recommended routing the idea through the safety committee; council members emphasized beginning the conversation and working with staff to identify options rather than immediately pursuing expensive studies.
The council took no formal action on the proposal at the meeting. Council members encouraged follow-up with the safety committee and staff so the matter can move from public comment to a committee review or formal agenda item.
