Halifax County board approves $191,000 for high school track renovations

The Halifax County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously April 6 to approve $191,000 to complete renovations of the county high school's track and competition wall.
Mr. Bragg, reporting from the finance committee, said the committee recommended that the full board approve the project and that the county's requested contribution to complete the work was $191,000. He said Hitachi had offered $50,000 and the town of South Boston had also pledged support. The committee vote recommending approval was three to zero.
Supervisors discussed when the track might again be usable for school competition; a board member said the track has been unusable for about seven to 10 years and that repairs could be completed within weeks after a contract modification is approved. The board noted the Virginia High School League would need to recertify the track for competition.
Supervisor Riddell requested a roll-call vote. The roll call recorded Yes votes from Supervisor Riddell, Chair Waller, Supervisor Oaks, Supervisor Wood, Vice Chair Smart, Supervisor Thompson, Supervisor McDowell and Supervisor Blane; the motion passed eight to zero.
The board also noted that tennis-court repairs remain a separate issue for future consideration. The funding approval is intended to allow track renovations to proceed during the summer so the school team could host competition in the coming fall season.
