Resident warns of unsecured garbage barrels outside No. 6 School, cites safety hazard

Steve Mack, a resident of West 39th Street, told the Bayonne Board of Education that large unsecured garbage barrels outside No. 6 School on 39th Street create a safety hazard. "These barrels are really big...there's no locking mechanism on these garbage barrels," he said, adding that when sanitation crews empty them they sometimes leave the barrels on the sidewalk where wind can push them into the street.
Mack said he chased a rolling barrel during a March windstorm and that he has photographs showing shards of glass and scrap metal left behind near what he described as a recently installed air-conditioning unit at the school. "They're going to get flat tires," he said, and asked the board to address the unsafe condition and the sanitation company's practices.
No formal board motion or staff directive addressing the barrels or sanitation contractor was recorded during the meeting. The board recorded routine approvals earlier in the session and thanked community speakers; members expressed appreciation to the host school and recognized Kelly Carroll as Hudson County Teacher of the Year.
Mack asked the board to review the trash-container situation and to consider measures such as secured lids or a locking mechanism to prevent barrels from rolling into streets and leaving hazardous debris. The meeting proceeded to adjournment without a recorded follow-up action on the concern.
