Board appoints Measure S oversight committee despite public objections about campaign reporting

Deputy Superintendent Annette Alurn said a panel interviewed applicants and recommended individuals to fill required categories; the list included Andrew Avick, Doris Donl Richmond, Sndi Foley, Scott Palmer, Karen Reed, Jason Soon and Nikki Vasquez.
During the public comment period, a speaker objected to some nominees, alleging past campaign finance reporting problems related to a current board member’s spouse and to a previous committee treasurer. The speaker said such issues made those nominees inappropriate for a committee tasked with oversight.
Alurn responded on the record: she characterized the statements as opinions and said she was not aware of any public record showing violations of law by the volunteers. She also called for respectful discourse about community volunteers.
The board moved forward with the appointments and approved the item by voice vote. The objections and the district’s response were recorded in the meeting minutes; the board did not postpone the appointments for additional investigation at the meeting.
