School committee pulls turf field decision after safety and testing concerns

Committee members pressed the administration for the scientific reports and vendor materials the working group consulted. Member Mailman and others asked which outside experts the working group had contacted and requested that any studies the committee reviewed be included in the record. Director Dryen told the committee staff had reviewed studies and made recommendations based on those documents but acknowledged the committee did not host outside experts directly for the working group.
Members also asked about field temperature monitoring and testing protocols for PFAS and other potential contaminants. The administration said product testing and credential development timelines may extend into 2027, giving the district time to await independent testing; the Foley Stadium sponsorship agreement would require evaluation when it approaches a 10‑year replacement cycle.
On the floor the committee approved a motion to remove (pull) GB4‑69 from tonight’s approvals and to request the administration return with the reports, expert contacts, and any temperature or testing data collected to date. The motion to hold the turf item passed after roll call; the committee proceeded to approve other operations items and consent agenda material.
The committee also discussed exploring alternatives to turf, including reinvestment in grass field maintenance practices and potential partnerships with local colleges to study sustainable maintenance methods.
Next steps: administration to compile the vendor studies and external reports reviewed by the working group, supply any existing temperature monitoring or safety testing, and report back to the committee before moving forward on major field projects such as Burncoat or a future Foley Stadium replacement.
