Multiple trustees raised student nutrition as a recurring concern identified in ThoughtExchange feedback and in public comment. One trustee proposed a success indicator limiting saturated fat and added sugar in meal items and asked staff to evaluate the district menu and relevant national standards; trustees discussed tradeoffs between nutrition standards and ensuring students will eat served meals.
Staff noted the district has a wellness policy and a new nutrition-services director; trustees asked the wellness committee to help develop measurable language and to bring possible metrics back to the board. A trustee also asked staff to review Oceanside’s Good Food Purchasing–aligned policy (local sourcing, nutrition density, workforce standards, time-to-eat guidance) as a possible template.
Trustees agreed in principle to pursue a wellness/healthy-food indicator but requested staff and the wellness committee return clearly defined, implementable metrics (including any cost implications and procurement impacts) before committing language in the LCAP.
