Leonard Williams was elected president of the Barstow Unified School District Board of Trustees during the board’s Dec. 1 meeting, replacing the prior president after a motion from Trustee Elizabeth Given and a second on the floor. The board also approved nomination and votes for vice president and clerk and took several personnel and business actions.
The trustees approved the establishment of multiple full-time custodian positions across district sites and the conversion of two part-time custodian posts to full-time roles, actions board staff said are intended to address ongoing custodial staffing needs and to support cafeterias and after-school programs. The board also approved an extension of a supplemental assignment so a former district electrician can mentor the current electrician through March 31, 2026, and established a senior office assistant position in pupil services to support grant management and medical billing related to a children and youth behavioral initiative.
On district technology, the board voted to adopt ParentSquare SmartSite as the district’s website hosting platform, with staff targeting a July 1, 2026 launch and forming a committee of administrators, IT staff and site representatives to oversee the refresh.
Finance staff presented the first interim financial report as of Oct. 31, 2025, and recommended a “positive certification” that the district can meet its financial obligations for the current year and the two subsequent years. The report included multi-year assumptions, projected enrollment of about 6,186 for 2025–26, an estimated average daily attendance of roughly 5,581.43 (about 90.23 percent) and itemized restricted program balances. Trustees heard questions about capital projects (HVAC, roofs, ADA work) and the district then approved the interim report.
During a public hearing required by law, the board reappointed Jason G to a one-year term on the personnel commission (Dec. 1, 2025–Dec. 1, 2026).
The meeting concluded after a brief return from closed session; board officers reported several closed-session discipline actions earlier in the meeting.
Next steps: approved staffing requests will move forward to hiring and onboarding in January; IT staff will proceed with the website project timeline and the finance office will file required interim certifications and updates.
