Nags Head introduces season's lifeguard crew, previews 50th-anniversary documentary and regional championships

Chad Moes, captain with Nags Head Ocean Rescue, introduced the town's lifeguard crew at the Board of Commissioners' June 11 meeting and said the service will mark its 50th anniversary this season.
"This is our 50th year in operation," Moes told the board and assembled crew, describing training groups, local competitions and a regional championship the town will host in July. "We ran our first training session in May…and we'll be in full swing until mid-August."
Moes said the staff includes many returning lifeguards and a large contingent from Canada and several U.S. states. Several guards took the podium to give their names, hometowns and years of service, underscoring the seasonal program's mix of local and international talent.
Roberta, a town organizer, invited residents to a free screening and premiere of a short film about the unit, titled "Nags Head Ocean Rescue: The Nags Head Ocean Rescue Story," scheduled for 7 p.m. July 15 at Janette's Pier. Roberta asked attendees to register because seating will be limited.
The mayor also told the audience the town is planning lifeguard housing with the goal of having it available next year, noting that dedicated housing is part of efforts to support seasonal staff retention.
The board greeted the introductions with applause and thanked the lifeguards for their service ahead of the busy summer season.
