School board approves calendar changes, restores student days and adopts social studies textbooks

At its March meeting, the Mount Vernon Community School Corp Board of Trustees approved three action items at the request of district administrators.
On action item 7.1, board members approved an amendment to the 26–27 school calendar to remove a scheduled two‑hour early release on April 7. Mr. Smemedley explained the calendar review process and said the early release was redundant given frequent early releases during the year. Stacy moved to amend the 26–27 calendar; Kelly seconded. The motion passed 4–0.
Under 7.2 the board approved the recommended 27–28 school calendar after Mr. Smemedley summarized stakeholder engagement, including two work sessions and principal input. The approved plan restores three student days (bringing the year to 180 student days); two of the restored days will be asynchronous e‑learning days tied to a parent‑teacher connection day in September and a February professional‑development day. Kelly moved to approve the 27–28 calendar; Chad seconded. The motion passed 4–0.
On item 7.3 Dr. Shipley asked the board to approve the purchase of seven social‑studies textbooks (five high‑school courses and middle/intermediate texts) plus an additional high‑school text for a new department of education course. The textbooks were placed on tables for review and one parent previewed the materials. Kelly moved approval; Stacy seconded and the motion passed 4–0.
Earlier in the meeting the board also adopted the consent agenda — including minutes, personnel and claims — by unanimous vote.
Recorded vote tallies were announced by hand: all motions passed unanimously, 4–0. No amendments were proposed during these votes. The board did not schedule further action on these items at this meeting.
