County will absorb $25,172 to hold harmless rural school resource deputy contracts

Sheriff John asked the commission to adjust how the county bills school resource deputy contracts so rural districts can continue to afford a deputy presence. He recommended using a department pay grade step (step one B32) for billing, which would lower costs for participating schools while increasing the county’s share by an estimated $25,172.
The sheriff said the change preserves deputies in schools and maintains daytime deputy stations that also help patrol coverage in small communities. “Having deputies in each of those schools really benefits not only those schools but also the cities where those schools are located because we have a deputy station there all day,” the sheriff said.
Commissioners discussed budget impacts and whether the county needed an immediate budget adjustment; county staff said the extra cost could be absorbed in the current budget and would be requested in the summer budget cycle. The commission approved the proposed billing/granting arrangement by roll call.
