Senate File 3339, presented March 9 to the Senate Education Policy Committee, would direct the Minnesota State High School League to add cricket as an emerging sport and, to the extent practicable, establish a spring season. Sponsor Senator Duckworth said the bill is meant to start a conversation about the sport’s growing participation.
Resident Sophie and other community witnesses described cricket's increasing popularity in Minnesota communities and the potential benefits for youth engagement and physical activity. Sophie told the committee that cricket is widely played in countries such as India and Pakistan and that Minnesota communities with immigrant populations have growing youth participation.
Roger, representing the Minnesota State High School League, explained the league’s existing "emerging sports" process: 20 schools must petition to sponsor a sport, after which the league can place a sport on a probationary schedule and, if participation thresholds are met, add it formally. He asked the committee to consider that existing model rather than immediate mandate language.
The committee laid SF 3339 over for possible inclusion in a future omnibus education bill.
