Council selects Mahir (Mihir) Pankaj as mayor and Gary Savage as mayor pro tem

At the May 11 meeting the Paris City Council nominated and elected Mahir (recorded also as 'Mihir') Pankaj as mayor and Gary Savage as mayor pro tem by unanimous votes; council also voted to fill the District 2 vacancy by nomination and appointment, to be revisited at the June meeting.
The Paris City Council on May 11 completed its annual officer elections and several related housekeeping items.
After the chair opened nominations for mayor, a council member nominated Mahir Pankaj for the office. The chair took a voice vote and declared the nomination carried by voice, recorded as 6–0. The council then opened nominations for mayor pro tem; Gary Savage was nominated and elected by voice vote, recorded 6–0.
Council then debated how to fill the vacant District 2 seat. Two options were discussed: (1) council nominate and appoint a qualified resident from District 2; or (2) staff advertise the vacancy, accept applications and conduct interviews. Following discussion the council chose option 1 — to nominate and appoint at a future meeting — and the motion carried 6–0. The mayor said nominations and vetting would be scheduled for the June 8 meeting.
The meeting record uses two spellings for the mayoral nominee ("Mahir" in the nomination and "Mihir" in the roll call). The council announcement treated the nomination as final; council members present voted unanimously for the slate.
