Berkshire Elementary fourth-graders present student council achievements to board

Eleven fourth-grade members of Berkshire Elementary's student council outlined their mission, selection process and activities to the board, reporting a book drive that collected more than 1,000 books and regular volunteer work including recess equipment upkeep.
Berkshire Elementary students told the board on March 9 that their student council exists to "provide leadership and service to our students, staff, and community." The presentation, led by principal Mrs. Gil and teacher Mrs. Star, featured 11 fourth‑grade council members who described an application and interview selection process overseen by Mrs. Gil, Mrs. Star and Mrs. Parente.
Students summarized recent work, including a book drive that "collected over 1,000 books in just three weeks" for the school library, monthly ball‑pumping at recess to keep equipment usable, and volunteer support at a Lieutenant Governor Jim Trussell assembly. Students said the leadership team currently has 18 members and meets every Wednesday at lunch.
Several students introduced themselves to the board by name: Preston Gerick, Eva Wayne, Rory Wells, Belle McCowsky, Griffin Layman, Jacob Sutter, Andrew Lee May, Coral, Saroma, Josephina Lane, Gracie Sherman, Annabelle Bur and Savannah Smith. Board members praised the students' independence and initiative and thanked them for their work on fundraising and service projects.
Principal Mrs. Gil told the board the group had nearly 45 applicants from the fourth grade at the start of the year and that the students planned a future fundraiser to buy additional playground equipment. The board invited the students to stay for the meeting or leave at their discretion; the presentation concluded with applause and expressions of appreciation from the board.
