Hernando school board to host AI workshop, stresses closed systems and guardrails

HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. — Members of the Hernando County School Board on Dec. 9 reviewed lessons from recent professional conferences and agreed to schedule a staff-led workshop to map how the district will pilot and govern artificial-intelligence tools in classrooms.
Board member Mr. Johnson said a breakout session on AI “changed my perception of how it can be used and my perception of … plagiarism,” and argued the district should pilot tools under controlled conditions. He told colleagues that AI can prompt students to explain reasoning rather than simply supplying answers — a practice he said could support learning if properly managed.
Board members and staff said the district needs clear procedures before any large-scale adoption. They flagged three priorities: run AI on district-approved, school-owned devices in a closed system to limit malware and data exposure; confirm security and data-privacy agreements with each vendor; and develop teacher training focused on prompt design and checking AI outputs for accuracy.
A participant noted legal and accuracy risks, including AI “hallucinations” — made-up answers — and the potential for commercial platforms to identify and bill districts for unauthorized copyrighted images. Board members asked staff to assemble current inventories of AI tools, collect existing agreements and present recommendations at a workshop led by district technology staff and school teams.
The board did not take a vote but directed staff to set up the workshop and return with proposed procedures and a security checklist.
