Tosa East freshman urges AP Literature and more advanced English options

Elizabeth Cover, a freshman at Tosa East, told the Wauwatosa School Board she finds the new English 9 CommonLit–based curriculum insufficiently challenging for students who want deeper humanities study.
Cover said the district currently offers a single AP English option for sophomores while providing more AP choices in math and science, and that she and peers feel humanities pathways have been detracked. She described CommonLit as "incredibly boring" and said she wants opportunities to read and discuss whole novels and take AP Literature. Cover said she and her father contacted the district humanities coordinator, Miss Carrell, seeking acceleration and called on the district to give students a voice in their education.
Board members thanked her for speaking. The board did not make an immediate curricular decision at the meeting; the comment was recorded during the public comment period for later consideration by district curriculum staff.
