Board approves Genuine Foods contract after committee recommends provider, citing fresh/local menu push

The Greater Albany school board approved a new nutrition services contract with Genuine Foods following a district RFP process and committee recommendation.

District staff said the process required by the Oregon Department of Education included mandatory site visits and scoring by a committee that included food‑service staff and district representatives. Of five companies that attended the mandatory site visit, three submitted formal proposals. Genuine Foods scored highest with seven of nine committee members and also submitted the lowest price per meal among proposals, staff said.

Mark Welch, vice president of operations for Genuine Foods, told the board the local cafeteria teams have “embraced change” and emphasized the vendor’s focus on fresh and locally sourced items, including sourcing fresh meat from a local farm where feasible. "They have embraced change. They are providing the nutrition the children need to succeed," Welch said, praising cafe staff and local leadership for implementing new menus and marketing.

District leaders stressed marketing and engagement as key strategies to increase student participation, a critical factor in controlling program expenses. Genuine representatives described planned outreach—signage, taste tests, Tri Tuesdays and other activities—to familiarize students and families with menu changes and encourage uptake.

The board moved to approve the contract as presented; the motion carried by voice vote. The contract is a one‑year agreement with an option to renew for up to four additional years, and staff noted the procurement package had already received Oregon Department of Education approval for required contract elements.

Next steps: staff will finalize the contract paperwork with Genuine Foods, continue local marketing efforts and monitor participation and program financials for future board review.
