City officials on May 19 said they are monitoring recent county plans to depopulate some youth housed at Los Padrinos and will coordinate with county supervisors and probation officials to determine whether La Verne will be affected.
A council speaker told the meeting the judge overseeing Los Padrinos had ruled the facility would not close completely but that some detainees would be depopulated to other camps in the surrounding area. City staff said they are working with the county supervisor and probation to understand the timing and composition of any population transfers and that the city will "have a voice" in those discussions and notify the community as details become available.
Council members said they are concerned about how relocations could affect local facilities and public safety; the council asked staff to maintain close communication with county officials and to return with updates if and when concrete plans or placements are proposed.
The city said it expects additional information in the coming month or two and will relay new developments to the public. No formal council action or vote was taken on the issue at the May 19 meeting.
