La Verne council issues several proclamations, unveils first city photo contest winners and appoints commission members

At its Sept. 15 meeting the La Verne City Council proclaimed National Preparedness Month, Hispanic Heritage Month and FASD awareness month; presented awards for a city photo contest; and approved a slate of residents to several advisory commissions.
The council issued a series of ceremonial proclamations recognizing National Preparedness Month, Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15–Oct. 15) and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder awareness month. Lonnie Shipman, the community risk reduction specialist, outlined CERT offerings and urged residents to prepare 72‑hour kits; Lorie Casiano accepted the Hispanic Heritage proclamation and shared family history; Shannon Ayakabachi accepted the FASD proclamation and urged greater supports and awareness.
Administrative Analyst Andrea Blockinger announced winners of La Verne’s first city photo contest (more than 40 submissions). Winners include Michelle Maldonado (Leverne community), Alyssa Schlench (Leverne Fun), Ryder Doerty (Founders Hall, Leverne Landmarks), Melissa Gersh (Leverne Nature) and Emily Casillas (Leverne Sports). The city said all submissions are posted at leverca.gov/photocontest and thanked local businesses that donated prizes.
The council also approved a slate of residents to fill seats on multiple advisory commissions and committees (Active Transportation & Infrastructure, Finance, Parks & Recreation, Planning, and the Senior Advisory Committee). Appointees will be notified by staff.
What happens next: Proclamations are ceremonial but may accompany outreach and events; photo contest entries remain on the city website; appointed commissioners will begin terms per staff notification.
