La Verne — Assembly Member John Harbidian addressed the City Council Dec. 1 with a legislative overview focused on wildfire recovery, public-safety equipment and priorities for the next year.
Harbidian, who represents a large district that includes La Verne, described bills signed by the governor that assist wildfire victims — including a mortgage forbearance measure and changes to insurance payout interest — and a firefighter safety equipment bill aimed at reducing cancer risks tied to protective gear. He said other proposals he supported (relating to speeding up prior authorizations for mental‑health services and energy affordability) did not advance this session but remain priorities.
"We had a few bills that got signed by the governor," Harbidian told the council, noting wildfire recovery work and the Eaton fire response as central to his first term. He described challenges in the insurance market that have led to canceled homeowner policies and reliance on the fair plan, and said he will continue to press for solutions to restore competition and affordability.
Harbidian also discussed the state’s budget pressures and a projected shortfall heading into 2026; he said he worked to secure funding for local housing programs that were not in the governor’s initial proposal. He closed by emphasizing constituent services available from his Sacramento office for state agencies such as DMV and EDD.
Council members thanked Harbidian for the presentation and for ongoing work on wildfire support and insurance issues. The presentation was delivered as part of the council’s scheduled ceremonial and presentation items and did not require council action.
