Hempstead board adopts package of parking, traffic and district measures

The Town of Hempstead Board on a May 2026 agenda adopted a package of local laws and administrative items covering parking, arterial stops, bus stops, handicap parking and water-district improvements across multiple villages.

At public hearings the board closed testimony and moved to adopt local laws affecting Franklin Square, Oceanside, West Hempstead, Elmont, Inwood, Lawrence, Levittown, Baldwin, Roosevelt and areas near Valley Stream. The items included restrictions on parking and standing, establishment of arterial stop intersections and bus-stop regulations. Board members voted by roll call; the clerk recorded unanimous "aye" votes on each motion to close the hearings and adopt the measures.

The items were introduced by the clerk as scheduled hearings; none drew extended adversarial debate during the formal hearings portion of the meeting. The board also approved proposed increases and improvements for the East Meadow and Levittown water districts during the same series of votes.

Taken together, the package implements targeted traffic-and-parking changes and utility improvements the town said are intended to address local safety, access and operational needs across multiple hamlets. The board moved the administrative calendar (items 10–44) as a block later in the meeting and approved that calendar by a single unanimous vote.

The formal votes conclude the local-rule process at the board level; any operational changes and signage will be scheduled and implemented by town departments or relevant agencies as appropriate.
