A district finance staff member updated the board on the budget timeline and the work underway to reduce projected losses. The presenter said he has been reviewing cash receipts, disbursements and accounting transactions to identify savings opportunities and strategies to reduce the general fund shortfall.
He reported an unexpectedly large insurance cost increase, saying premiums initially appeared to be up about 19.5% before negotiations and that the change delayed completion of the budget. "You guys were right in the middle, 19 and a half before we started to work through options," he said, noting that typical annual insurance increases are far lower. The presenter said staff are negotiating options to reduce the impact and are working through curriculum purchase timing and vendor negotiations to stretch budgeted amounts.
He asked trustees to expect a budget that still shows losses this year but emphasized the board will review a two‑year plan to eliminate the deficit in future years. He said the district must publish budget documents at least 10 days before the public budget hearing planned for June. Staff said they will hold a focused budget workshop to present options and projected impacts before the formal hearing.
No formal budget vote took place at the meeting; staff will return with more detailed figures and proposals.
