Choices Charter School reports improved attendance and dashboard gains in midyear LCAP update

Brent Givens, director of San Juan Choices Charter School, presented the charter’s 2025–26 LCAP midyear update and described areas of progress and continued need.
Givens said Choices serves roughly 2,275 students in grades 6–12 and that projected 2025–26 revenue is just over $3,860,000 with the majority coming from LCFF funds. He reported midyear spending consistent with pacing to sustain tutoring, counseling and credit recovery programs and said staff had spent about 44 percent of the LCAP‑aligned budget as of Jan. 23.
On outcome indicators, Givens said chronic absenteeism at Choices has dropped to 12 percent compared with a state rate of about 17 percent, and he noted improvements on the California School Dashboard: graduation and the college/career indicator both moved two levels from red to yellow; ELA rose from orange to yellow and math improved from red to orange.
Givens told the board Choices will continue to expand tutoring and counseling, increase dual enrollment opportunities and pilot a tiered reengagement framework to support early credit recovery and on‑time graduation. The board offered no formal action on the report.
