La Mesa-Spring Valley presents LCAP update, cites attendance-recovery gains and reduction in suspensions

District staff delivered the annual Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) update at the La Mesa-Spring Valley board meeting, reviewing program highlights, budget challenges and next steps for curriculum adoptions.

The presenter described the LCAP as the district's three-year plan that sets goals, actions and expenditures aligned with the state's eight priorities. The presentation emphasized local control and transparency under the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) and noted the challenge of balancing aspirational goals with limited funding.

On program results, staff reported the district enrolled 2,330 students in the attendance-recovery program this year. Sixty-three percent of those participants showed improved attendance, and the program produced 3,429 days of recovered attendance credited toward average daily attendance. The presenter also reported an approximately 26% decrease in suspensions tied to middle-school diversion and site-level ownership of diversion programming.

Looking ahead, staff said the district will prepare for K–5 math and English-language-arts adoptions, sustain investments in professional learning, and incorporate equity-multiplier funding in Bankroft's LCAP goal next year. Board members asked clarifying questions about how attendance-recovery hours are recorded, which staff deliver sessions, and whether the program applies to absences (staff said it is designed to make up absences, not tardies). Staff said the program is delivered by a mix of positions funded creatively by sites and district funds.
