La Mesa-Spring Valley honors Purple Star school and district employees of the year

La Mesa-Spring Valley trustees highlighted school and staff accomplishments at their May meeting, recognizing La Mesa Dale Elementary for its Purple Star designation and honoring two district employees for outstanding service.
Principal Tammy Babbot told the board La Mesa Dale — which the board identified as serving about 20% military-connected families — has a community liaison and practices aimed at easing transitions for military children. "We are so proud and honored to be recognized as a Purple Star School," Babbot said, adding the designation opens access to regional resources for military families.
The board also presented the district's classified employee of the year award to Jessica Nobles, a community schools facilitator at Bankroft Elementary. Speakers described Nobles' role in bringing community partners to campus, saying programs she helped coordinate included dental and vision services and that she "meets families where they are".
Victoria Colenberg, known as Miss Tori and a special-education teacher at Murray Manor Elementary, received the certificated employee of the year honor. In remarks printed by presenters, staff noted Colenberg's clinical experience, college-level teaching, and inclusive classroom practices. Presenters cited the classroom philosophy of "assume competence" and described community-based lessons and tailored supports that staff say deepen student engagement.
The recognitions were followed by a short reception for honorees and families before the board continued with regular business.
