Sayreville to dedicate Kennedy Park skate park to Troy Janowski

The Sayreville Borough Council unanimously approved a motion Feb. 9 to dedicate the Kennedy Park skate park in memory of Troy Janowski, a resident credited by volunteers with leading the project’s creation and upkeep.

Mikey, the borough’s liaison to recreation, told the council he had reached out to people involved in the park’s inception and received ‘‘unanimous support and heartfelt appreciation’’ for Janowski’s contributions. Mikey moved to formally dedicate the skate park; the motion was seconded and approved on a roll-call vote.

Several longtime volunteers and family members spoke in the public portion. A volunteer identified as Rich described Janowski’s role in securing grant money and coordinating builders, saying Janowski ‘‘pulled it all together’’ and worked with a California-based skatepark builder who supplied a concrete park valued at $85,000 for roughly $50,000 in grant funds. Becky, a family member, said the park ‘‘was his pride and joy’’ and thanked the council for the dedication.

Council President Zabrowski and other members acknowledged the crowd in the chamber and praised Janowski’s decades of stewardship of the facility. The council’s formal vote marks an official borough recognition; arrangements for signage or a dedication ceremony were not specified in the meeting record and will be set by the recreation department and family representatives.

What’s next: staff were directed to coordinate with the family and the recreation liaison on the timing and any signage or plaque for the dedication.
