The Ipsilante City Council on May 5 approved a one-year fee waiver enabling Depottown Cruise Night to operate this summer while staff and council continue to evaluate a longer-term multi-year agreement.
Public testimony in favor of the event came from Peter Church and Claire Broadick, who told council Cruise Night draws visitors, supports Depottown businesses and is especially valuable during upcoming multi-year construction in the district. Council discussion focused on neighborhood impact, outreach to businesses and residents, the correct event dates, and whether the city should offer a full multi-year agreement or a shorter waiver while the city gathers more information.
Council member McClean initially brought forward a three-year resolution; after deliberations and a staff review of fee calculations (the applicant reduced the requested dates from late September to Aug. 27 to reflect operational constraints), council amended the resolution to grant a one-year fee waiver for the event dates proposed by the organizer. Council conducted a roll-call vote on the amendment and the amended resolution passed.
Council and staff emphasized that the waiver reduces city charges for permits and operational fees but does not waive refundable deposits or private costs organizers must cover. Staff also urged organizers to provide clearer physical boundaries, attendance and economic-impact data, and a cleanup plan so future requests can be evaluated more quickly.
The waiver will allow Cruise Night to proceed this summer under the organizer’s conditions while staff and council refine special-events rules, fee schedules, and longer-term agreements for recurring events in Depottown.
