Morris School District presents community‑driven five‑year strategic plan to board

The Morris School District board on Monday heard the final report from a community‑led strategic planning process that will guide the district’s priorities over the next five years.
Charlene Peterson of the New Jersey School Boards Association, who facilitated the fall planning sessions, told the board the process gathered stakeholders across 18 small groups to identify strengths, challenges and a vision for 2030. "This truly is the district’s plan," Peterson said, describing a bottom‑up process that distilled community input into five broad goal areas and discrete objectives.
The plan organizes work into five buckets: academic programming, teaching and learning; learning beyond the classroom; building optimal learning environments; communication and community partnerships; and career readiness. Presenters said academic priorities include expanding equitable access to rigorous coursework, supporting bilingual and neurodivergent learners with flexible pathways, and increasing AP/pre‑AP participation. "Our goal is to foster academic excellence through inclusive and culturally responsive teaching practices," said Mr Kryy, the district’s director of elementary education.
Administrators described proposals to maximize instructional time (including a new master schedule at the middle school to guarantee daily math), broaden elective and computer science offerings, and support teachers with targeted professional development and a revised evaluation rubric. The district also highlighted pilots for social‑emotional learning and digital citizenship and plans to expand internships and dual‑enrollment options through the STEM Academy and community partnerships.
Facilities needs — from flexible classrooms and upgraded air quality systems to improved auditoriums and a potential turf field — will be prioritized in upcoming capital planning. Board members were told an architect selection and a tentative referendum planning timeline will follow as staff refine cost estimates.
Superintendent Dr Muchi said the administration will translate the goals into action plans and measurable annual objectives that will inform superintendent goals and budgeting. The board will have additional committee review and is expected to discuss a motion to accept the plan at a future meeting before final adoption.
The presentation materials and a full listing of community input are available on the Morris School District website; board members asked that committees reserve time to review the action‑plan templates and success indicators before voting. The board did not vote on the plan at this meeting; presenters said implementation will begin once action plans are finalized and approved.
