Animal Protection Services: multi-site shelter models tied to much larger counties than Will County

Anna Payton, administrator for Will County Animal Protection Services, summarized comparative research she requested from a national shelter association on counties operating multiple shelter campuses. She said the association provided data from three larger counties and that those counties had much higher intake, budgets and staffing than Will County.
Payton said San Diego County's countywide figures are far larger than Will County's: "Their size of their county is basically 4,500 square miles. Their population is over 3 million. They have two campuses. Their animal intake is over 6,000. Their budget is 11.2 and they have 66 staff members," she said, adding that Will County is about 1,200 square miles with a population just over 700,000, an annual intake around 900, a budget near $2.29 million and 13 staff members.
Payton concluded that, based on the samples provided, she found no county of comparable size using a multi-site model and said she would re-email the committee the documents she sent on March 5.
What happens next: Payton said she would re-send the materials to committee staff and answer follow-up questions by email.
